I wanted to make a purple dial for a long time, and finally I could finish this masterpiece.
Purple can easily become too flashy or too much. But after coming back to Japan, I found new aging techniques that allowed me to finish it in a really beautiful way.
Too much aging ruins the beauty of purple color, and too little aging feels too flashy. After many tries, I finally could find the right balance.
My interest in purple grew rapidly after moving back to Japan, especially Kyoto. In Japan, purple has been a special color for more than 1,000 years, and in the rank system established in 603 CE, purple was the highest color.
◇ About "KYO-MURASAKI"
This watch is inspired by color called『京紫』
Kyoto was the original capital of Japan, and Kyo Murasaki has a more classical and traditional feeling to me. It was also used to distinguish Kyoto purple from Edo Murasaki. Compared with Edo Murasaki, which has more blue tone, Kyo Murasaki has more red tone, warmer feeling, and more elegant character.
◇ Other Details
That is why this faded brownish purple was the perfect choice for this watch. The bezel was originally just black, and it took 2 months to fade into this beautiful color. It is not just faded, but has a real patina. You will see nice gradation from darker to lighter and mottled uneven color.
I also chose tarnished gold cobra hands for this piece. Normal Mercedes hands felt too boring and did not match this watch. This combination gave the watch much more character.
