"Sabi" means "Rust" in English nowadays. But as you already realised that "Sabi" is part of very famous Japanese word of "Wabi-Sabi".
The Japanese philosophy of "Sabi" has deep roots in an older word. In this case, it comes from the ancient Japanese word "Sabu" (寂ぶ). This word carried meanings of growing old, fading in color, and yes, even rusting. It makes a sense of decline over time and the fading of vitality. But this words with negative connotations.
However, this is where the beauty of "Sabi" came from. Over time, the meaning of "Sabi" evolved to describe a profound appreciation for the unique character and flavor that comes with age. Which we call "Patina". This finds beauty in the process of aging and the marks of time. This is the essence and origin of "Sabi". seeking beauty in the weathered and worn. Which I love and you love.
◆ About “ SHIKAKU”
Let’s get back to the main story which is about this watch “ The Shikaku ”. 42mm diameter sounds big but it’s not. My wrist on picture is only 16.5cm small wrist. But doesn’t feel too big or bothering. Because of well balanced shape and thickness. I really like the view from side.
I choose sapphire crystal for this watch. I know domed plexiglass has more taste. But this type has way bigger crystal than normal watch. That means more chance and possibility of cracks. So I went for domed sapphire crystal for this. You can see my Vintage Aging processes of dial & hand more. So it’s benefit I didn’t know.
